Killer Joe

What I liked:

  • The real star of this film is Juno Temple.  She can balance being innocent and wise beyond her years very well.
  • Matthew McConaughey seemed to really enjoy his role.
  • For most of the film, Thomas Haden Church seems to blend into the background.  It is not until the end when he takes his turn to shine.
  • Gina Gershon has a very difficult scene to do but does so with as much dignity as one could have.
  • It is surprisingly entertaining and even funny at times.

What I didn't like:
  • Emile Hirsch seemed to act way too over the top.
  • As much as I liked Temple, playing a 12 year old girl was unbelievable.  If Dottie cold have been 16, it would have been better.
  • The makeup used to bruise Hirsch's face looked fake.

Side Note:
  • This film touches on some dark themes like pedophilia and murder.  It is rated NC-17.
  • It is not a film that most people will enjoy watching but that doesn't mean that it is a bad film.

Grade: B
