The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

What I liked:

  • It was beautifully made.  Most everything looks real.  The special effects are great.
  • Hair, makeup, and costumes are excellent.
  • It has a great cast: Iam McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Dean O'Gorman, Aidan Turner, John Callen, Peter Hambleton, Jed Brophy, Mark Hadlow, Adam Brown, Elijah Wood, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Andy Serkis.

What I didn't like:
  • It doesn't draw you in to care about any of these characters.  I feel like they are assuming that you care because we cared about Lord of the Rings.  Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.
  • It's a long film at 2 hours and 40 minutes.
  • There are a lot of battle scenes where nothing really get accomplished.
  • Speaking of battles, how is it that all of the Dwarves and the Hobbit make it out of these battles unscathed?

Grade: C+
