The Iron Lady

What I liked:

  • Meryl Streep gives another outstanding performance.
  • Alexandra Roach gives a fantastic performance as young Margaret Thatcher.
  • Jim Broadbent, Harry Lloyd, Anthony Head, Richard E. Grant, and Roger Allam make up this wonderful supporting cast.
  • Hair and makeup did an excellent job.
What I didn't like:
  • I went into this thinking that I was going to learn about Margaret Thatcher in her political role but this film chose to focus more on her personal life, specifically her health issues and how she dealt with the death of her husband.  I would have preferred to learn more about how she worked her way to becoming Prime Minister.

Grade: B-

  1. Agreed ..thought Meryl was great as usual, but the story spent way too much time on present day and not delving enough into what made her the "Iron Lady"

  2. "The Iron Lady" lets us look on as Margaret Thatcher looks back over her personal and political life. Those around her fear that she may 'get out again' as shown in the movie when she walked to the grocery store because she was out of milk. Throughout the movie, we see her husband talking to her, encouraging her, teasing her, even though he had been dead for a number of years.

For me, it was interesting to see how Margaret Thatcher came to the strong positions she held throughout her life. Meryl Streep is wonderful in any movie. This is no exception.

I believe that those who are interested in history will very much enjoy this movie, regardless of whether they share the same political views or not. Anyone not remotely interested in history or Margaret Thatcher's part of it specifically, will only enjoy the movie to see Meryl Streep. It isn't an action movie. There is no great romance portrayed. What we are left with is, Margaret Thatcher and how she became the powerful Prime Minister of England.
