What I liked:
- Meryl Streep is so good that she didn't have to speak for most of the film. Her facial expressions said everything. She kept this role understated and it worked well.
- Tommy Lee Jones is a funny, grumpy old man.
- It is funny because it is real. It was also sad because it is real.
- I liked that they portrayed the average American. She worked at Coldwater Creek and shopped at Barnes and Noble. Product placement, yes, but also better than her shopping on Rodeo drive. He complained about a $10.95 breakfast. Their anniversary gifts to each other were a new water heater and an upgraded cable subscription. This is the world as I see it.
- Elisabeth Shue!
- I enjoyed the soundtrack.
What I didn't like:
- Dr. Feld could have been played by anyone. Steve Carell didn't bring anything special to the role.
- Jones' character was all over the map in character development. It was hard to understand how he got from point A to point B sometimes.
- Shue only got 3 minutes of screen time. Wish we could have seen more.
Grade: B+
And yes, the book that Kay gets is real...
